A young man identified as Md Faysal, 26, was tied to an electric pole and beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Cox’s Bazar’s Maheshkhali upazila, it is alleged. The incident took place on Tuesday (September 15) morning in the East Fakirghona area of Boro Maheshkhali.
According to local sources, Faysal was detained on suspicion of theft late Monday (September 14) night and tied to a pole. He died on Tuesday morning after being beaten several more times.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. It shows a group of teenagers beating Faysal with bricks over the theft allegation. The disturbing footage has sparked outrage in the area.
Boro Maheshkhali Union Parishad chairman Enayet Ullah Babul confirmed the incident, saying he had heard that a person was beaten to death over a theft allegation.
Maheshkhali police station’s officer-in-charge (OC), Mohammad Abdus Soltan, said beating someone to death in this manner is wrong, and that legal action would be taken against those involved.
