M A Khalek, general secretary of Meherpur district Awami League and a former chairman of Gangni upazila parishad, was arrested by police at the Darshana Zainagar land port immigration checkpoint in Chuadanga while trying to cross into India. He was arrested around noon on Thursday as he attempted to cross into India through the Darshana immigration checkpoint, and was handed over to Meherpur police that afternoon. After the legal process was completed, he was sent to Meherpur district jail around 5pm.
According to Darshana immigration police sources, Khalek had come to the checkpoint intending to travel to India on a medical visa for treatment. While checking his documents, immigration police grew suspicious. Inquiries were then made about him in Meherpur through an intelligence agency, which found a sabotage case filed against him in 2024. He was subsequently arrested and handed over to Meherpur police.
Police sources said Khalek faces several other cases besides the 2024 sabotage case, which is numbered case 11. Police later took him to Meherpur, and after the necessary legal process was completed in the afternoon, he was sent to the district jail. Police officials concerned said the cases against him are being verified and further action will be taken in accordance with legal procedure.
