A young man died of electrocution in Faridpur’s Boalmari upazila. The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Sheikh, 32.
Police recovered his body Saturday morning, August 29, from a paddy field in Baniyari village, under the upazila’s Moyna union.
Ibrahim, a resident of Beljani village in the same union, was the son of Muktar Sheikh.
According to police and local sources, an irrigation pump in a field in Baniyari village had an electrical connection. Locals believe Ibrahim was electrocuted while attempting to steal the pump’s electrical wiring. His body was later found lying near the site.
Local resident Abdur Rahman said: “In the morning, my niece went to collect palm fruit and saw a body lying in the paddy field. When she screamed, people from the surrounding area rushed to the spot.”
He said: “Electrical wire was wrapped around Ibrahim’s hand, and a pair of cutting pliers was tucked into his waist.”
He claimed Ibrahim died while trying to steal the irrigation pump’s motor and wiring.
Boalmari police station inspector (investigation) Saidur Rahman said police went to the scene after receiving the report and recovered Ibrahim’s body from the paddy field. He said it is initially believed he died of electrocution, and that the body will be sent for autopsy.
Madhukhali circle assistant superintendent of police S M Masuduzzaman said police recovered Ibrahim’s body from the paddy field after receiving the report. It is initially believed he was electrocuted while attempting to cut electrical wire, he said, though the actual cause of death will be confirmed once the autopsy report is available. Legal proceedings related to the incident are under way.
