Tense situations broke out in several French cities after France’s 2-0 semifinal defeat by Spain and exit from the World Cup. After the match, some fans clashed with police in several areas, including Paris and Lyon, and law-enforcement forces detained more than 160 people across the two cities in operations to bring the situation under control.
The French outlet BFMTV reported that 141 people were arrested in the capital, Paris, alone. According to the police prefecture, most of the arrests were for firing firework mortars at police officers and emergency workers.
In Lyon, meanwhile, hundreds of supporters watched the semifinal on a big screen at the Place Bellecour, and many stayed on after the match ended. The situation grew heated when a few small groups threw various objects, especially fireworks, at members of the security forces.
To bring the situation under control, police were assisted by the CRS 83 riot-control unit. In a joint operation, protesters were dispersed and about 20 people detained. According to local authorities, most of those detained were young people born between 2002 and 2011.
There was some relief in the whole affair, however: authorities said no one had been seriously injured during the clashes, and no significant damage to public or private property had been reported so far.
