The popular Dhaka film actor Siam Ahmed is a supporter of the Spain team. Whenever a major international football tournament comes around, he shares his love for his favourite side online. This time, Spain beat Argentina in the World Cup final, with Argentina losing 1-0 and letting the title slip away.

After Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the final was confirmed, Siam shared a reel with his wife on Facebook. In it he is heard saying that Argentina could not be said to be playing well, and that this was what people expected of Spain. The caption carried only a Spanish flag emoji, expressing his delight in his team.

In Bangladesh, where Brazil and Argentina have the most supporters, Siam Ahmed is an exception. Spain has been his favourite team since 2007, a love that grew from watching David Villa play. The actor was captivated by Villa’s pace, his outstanding finishing and his leadership on the pitch, and gradually began following Spain regularly.

“At that time Spain had established themselves as one of the best teams in the world,” Siam said. “Their flawless passing football, their possession play and their teamwork were remarkable. The football of that generation — David Villa, Andrés Iniesta, Xavi Hernández — still floats in the memory. So even after all these years, Spain is my favourite team, and their success always brings me joy.”
