Father in jail, mother gone; three children left without shelter

Their father is in jail, and their mother is gone too. She left behind three young children, who had been fending for themselves since. Police from Keraniganj Model Police Station eventually rescued the three children after finding them crying on the street.

The incident occurred in the Muktirbagh area of Kalindi union in Keraniganj, Dhaka. The children are 8 years old, 5 years old and just 3 months old.

According to local sources, the children’s mother had moved into rented accommodation at Torab Ali’s house a few days earlier. Three days ago, she left, abandoning her children. Their father is reportedly being held at Kashimpur Jail. The mother’s current whereabouts could not be confirmed.

Saddam Hossain, a village police officer in Kalindi union, said that while returning home around 3 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 8), he saw one child being carried and the other two crying on the street. With the help of local residents, he rescued the three children and took them to the police station.

Local residents said the children had not been getting proper food for several days. There is particular concern for the 3-month-old infant.

Md. Ruhul Kuddus, officer in charge of Keraniganj Model Police Station, said arrangements are being made through the Department of Social Services to provide safe shelter for the two older children. Temporary shelter is also being arranged for the 3-month-old infant.
