Father dies saving son from drowning in Saghata

A father named Moynul Islam, 35, died in Saghata upazila, Gaibandha, after saving his 10-year-old son, who had suddenly gone under in deep water while they were fishing in a beel. Although he managed to save his son, he himself could not resurface from the water.

The accident occurred Saturday evening at Teliyan Beel in the upazila’s Bonarpara union.

The deceased, Moynul Islam, was the son of the late Mohammad Ali of East Shimultair village, Bonarpara union. His 10-year-old son, who was rescued alive, is named Mahid.

Local sources said Moynul Islam and his son Mahid went together with a net to fish at Teliyan Beel in Bonarpara union on Saturday afternoon. At one point while fishing, both began to go under in the beel’s deep water. In that moment, Moynul made a desperate effort to save his son. He managed to push his son to safety on the bank, but he himself went under in the deep water.

Locals who saw the incident from a distance alerted the fire service and rushed to help with the rescue. Members of the Bonarpara Fire Service later reached the scene, searched the area, and recovered Moynul Islam’s lifeless body.

Local resident Minhajul Islam said saving his son with his own life would remain an incomparable example of a parent’s sacrifice.

Tofazzal Hossain, in-charge of the Bonarpara fire station, said fire service personnel reached the scene as soon as they received the news and recovered the body after a rescue operation.
