Power Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, who developed pneumonia after first running a fever, is being treated in the coronary care unit (CCU) at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital. A three-member medical board of specialists in various fields has been formed to oversee his treatment, and his care and tests are proceeding on the board’s advice.
Mahmud, 76, was brought to the emergency department of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital and Research Institute around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday with fever, breathing difficulty and cough.
A ministry official said the minister had been staying home for several days due to a viral fever. In a statement Wednesday afternoon, the hospital said his medical history includes diabetes and high blood pressure, and that he recently had a stent placed in a heart blood vessel in Bangkok. Initial tests in the emergency department found breathing difficulty and low blood-oxygen levels. He received emergency treatment and was later admitted to the CCU for further testing. A three-member medical board was formed immediately to oversee his care.
After reviewing various blood test results and a chest X-ray, doctors identified pneumonia in his lungs and began the necessary treatment. A medical board of specialists in multiple fields was then formed at 9 a.m. Wednesday, and his treatment and testing are continuing on the board’s advice.
He is currently in stable physical condition. The medical board said he will need to remain in the hospital for further observation and complete treatment.
