Man stabbed to death while catching thief in Nagarpur

A man named Majnu Mia, 50, has been stabbed to death by a suspected thief he was trying to catch in Nagarpur, Tangail. Two others, Altaf and Nazmul, were injured trying to stop the intruder.

The incident happened at around 4:30am on Wednesday (September 30) in Barapusha village of the upazila.

Majnu Mia, son of the late Bellal Mia of the village, worked as a casting mason’s assistant and was a father of three. Villagers later caught the suspect, Saminur Mia, and handed him over to police.

According to local and police sources, Saminur Mia, son of Munnaf Mia of Goyhata village, went to Majnu Mia’s house in Barapusha to steal at around 4:30am on Wednesday. The householder’s younger daughter, Julekha, came out of the house to relieve herself and saw him. When she shouted “thief”, Saminur hid behind a haystack.

When Majnu Mia grabbed him, he stabbed Majnu in the neck and throat with a knife. When neighbours Altaf and Nazmul came to help, he stabbed them too. Local people took the injured to Nagarpur upazila health complex, where the doctor on duty declared Majnu Mia dead.

Dr Mir Rakibul Islam Leen, acting resident medical officer of the health complex, said Majnu Mia died after the knife cut his carotid artery. The other two were released after first aid.

“Police visited the scene after hearing of the incident. The body has been recovered and sent to Tangail Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. Saminur, who was involved, has been arrested and is being treated in police custody at Nagarpur health complex,” said officer-in-charge Md Zahurul Islam, adding that legal proceedings are under way.
