Two cousins have been electrocuted after getting caught in a snapped rural electricity line lying in a field in Bhaluka, Mymensingh.
The incident happened at around 9:45am on Wednesday (September 30) in Kharuali village of Bhaluka Sadar union. The dead are Dhanu Akand, 65, and Shahab Uddin Akand, 63.
According to family and local sources, Dhanu Akand, son of the late Majid Akand of Kharuali, went to work in a field north of his house in the morning, got caught in a snapped Palli Bidyut line lying in the field and died on the spot.
His cousin Shahab Uddin Akand, son of the late Aziz Akand of the same household, went to rescue him and was also electrocuted and critically injured. Local people took him to Bhaluka government hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Local teacher Md Jannatul Islam Sohag said he saw a Palli Bidyut line lying snapped on the ground at around 9am. The Palli Bidyut office was informed, but no quick action was taken to remove the line or cut the power, he said.
Md Nasir Uddin, general manager of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity-2, said he had heard about the incident and an inquiry committee is being formed. If negligence by anyone in the office is found, appropriate action will be taken, he said.
