EC gazettes redrawn boundaries for 11 constituencies, including Thakurgaon-1

The Election Commission (EC) has published a new gazette redrawing the boundaries of 11 parliamentary constituencies, including Thakurgaon-1, to reflect newly formed upazilas and union parishads. EC officials say that while the change amounts to a correction on paper, it will bring no practical change on the ground.

The constituencies are: Thakurgaon-1, Bogura-2, Pirojpur-1, Mymensingh-10, Brahmanbaria-3 and 4, Cumilla-3, Lakshmipur-2 and 3, Chattogram-2, and Cox’s Bazar-1. The EC published the gazette Sunday.

According to the EC gazette, Thakurgaon-1 is the seat vacated by President Mirza Fakhrul Islam. The constituency, formerly made up of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, now also includes Ruhia and Bhulli upazilas. These two upazilas were formed by splitting Sadar upazila. They were approved at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization (NICAR) in May.

In Bogura-2, Mokamtala upazila has been added alongside Shibganj. Mokamtala upazila was approved at the NICAR meeting in May.

In Mymensingh-10, the newly formed South Gafargaon upazila has been added alongside Gafargaon upazila. This upazila was approved at the NICAR meeting in July.

In Brahmanbaria-3, the Barishal union parishad of Akhaura upazila has been added. Brahmanbaria-4 has been formed excluding that union parishad. This new Barishal union, formed by separating six villages from Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila’s Basudev union and attaching them to Akhaura upazila, was approved in May.

In Cumilla-3, Bangra upazila has been added alongside Muradnagar upazila. Bangra upazila was approved at the NICAR meeting in July. In Chattogram-2, the newly formed Fatikchhari North upazila has been added alongside Fatikchhari upazila. In Cox’s Bazar-1, the newly formed Matamuhuri upazila has been included.
