A 4-year-old child, Shahban Ahmed, has died after drowning in a pond in Jaintapur upazila, Sylhet. Another child, Tanisha, was injured in the incident and is receiving hospital treatment.
The incident occurred around noon Thursday in Hemu Majhpara village, in Ward 5 of Fatehpur union in the upazila.
Shahban Ahmed, who died, was the son of Kashem Ali Master of the same village.
According to local sources, Shahban and Tanisha fell into a pond next to the home of Faruk Ahmed, a member of Ward 1 of Fatehpur union, without their families’ knowledge. Around noon, a local woman spotted Tanisha struggling in the water, began shouting for help, and rescued her immediately. Shahban, however, could not be seen at the time. After a search, his body was later recovered from underwater in the pond.
Tanisha, who was injured, was quickly rescued and admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where she remains under treatment.
Confirming the incident, Jaintapur Model police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman Molla said police are taking the necessary legal action.
