Two young men have been arrested by police while trying to sell gold stolen from the home of an expatriate in Jhenaidah’s Kaliganj. They were detained yesterday, Tuesday, afternoon at Khajura Bazar in Jashore’s Bagharpara upazila. Two and a half bhori of gold was recovered from them at the time. Kaliganj police station confirmed the matter today, Wednesday.
In the early hours of September 13, thieves broke a window at the home of expatriate Parvez Kamal in Kaliganj’s Digharpara village and made off with around 12.5 bhori of gold jewellery and 5,800 taka in cash. The following day, Kamal’s wife, Sima Khatun, filed a case at Kaliganj police station against unidentified persons.
According to Sima Khatun’s account, the thieves sprayed an anaesthetic through her bedroom window late that night, causing everyone in the house to fall into a deep sleep. Taking advantage of this, the thieves cut through the window bars and entered the house. They broke open an almirah and took away around 12.5 bhori of gold jewellery. Later, at dawn, her mother woke for Fajr prayers and found the window and almirah broken, confirming the theft.
Police said that after receiving the expatriate’s wife’s complaint, they moved to solve the theft and recover the stolen goods. Through confidential sources, they learned the thieves had gone to sell the gold at Bagharpara’s Khajura Bazar. On Tuesday afternoon, police led by Kaliganj police station sub-inspector Rana Pratap raided the bazar and detained Rahul Hossain, 30, and Mehedi Hasan, 25, both of Kaliganj’s Digharpara village. A search recovered gold jewellery, including a chain and earrings, weighing two and a half bhori.
Kaliganj police station OC Zulfikar Ali said police had detained the two thieves involved in the incident and recovered some of the gold. He said they are being questioned, and that a police operation is under way to recover the remaining gold.
