Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said the ninth national pay scale will take effect this year. He said further discussion is needed on the matter, with the government to announce a decision soon. He disclosed this Monday, August 17, following a meeting on the pay commission held at the Ministry of Finance.
The meeting was chaired by the finance minister. He said: “The pay commission has many dimensions. We are considering all of them. Discussions were held today. Further discussion on this is needed. We will meet again on this later.”
Responding to reporters’ questions, the minister said the new pay scale will be implemented this year. However, he said the government’s approach to inflation once the scale takes effect would be announced after the pay scale is declared.
At the same event, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the government has managed to improve the country’s law and order situation. He said further improvement to meet public expectations would take more time. He said the programs the government has implemented and launched within 180 days have been praised, and that the government has successfully managed one or two critical situations as well.
On energy security, Salahuddin Ahmed said plans are being developed to ensure the country’s energy security. Extensive investment is being sought from around the world, alongside domestic investment. He said the prime minister has decided to build a land-based LNG terminal in Matarbari, while a survey is underway to determine the location for another FSRU in Moheshkhali.
On reducing import dependency in the gas sector, the minister said import dependency for gas developed under the previous government. To move away from this situation, domestic gas exploration has begun. He said the gas problem could be resolved using domestic resources within a few years.
