Have you ever looked at a clock on the wall and wondered, “Why do clock hands always turn to the right?” What would happen if one day the hands suddenly started turning the other way? The answer to this question lies in the ingenuity of people long ago, and a curious rule of nature.
Many, many years ago, people didn’t have battery-powered or digital clocks like we do today. Back then, people told time using the sun’s shadow. They would plant a straight stick in the ground in an open space. When sunlight fell on the stick, it cast a shadow. As the sun moved across the sky from morning to evening, the shadow would slowly shift in one direction.
In the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth, where many ancient civilizations arose, that shadow moved in a direction we’d recognize today as turning to the right. People learned to measure time by watching that shadow’s movement. Later, when mechanical clocks were built, their hands were made to turn in that same familiar direction. That is why clock hands turn to the right — a direction we now know as “clockwise.”
Interestingly, in the Southern Hemisphere, a sundial’s shadow moves somewhat differently. Even so, by the time clocks that turned to the right had already become popular worldwide, everyone began following the same convention. This made it easier for people in different countries to understand time the same way.
Clock hands teach us another important lesson. Notice how the second hand never stops moving, even for a moment. The minute hand advances slowly, and the hour hand moves even more slowly — but none of them are ever idle. Small moments add up to a minute, many minutes add up to an hour, and hours add up to make a beautiful day. So small tasks should never be considered unimportant. Think about it — if you read for just 10 minutes every day, imagine how many stories, how much new information and how much knowledge you’ll have gathered after a few months! Just like the hands of a clock moving steadily forward, even big goals get accomplished one day if you keep moving little by little. So next time you look at a clock, don’t just check the time. Remember that those small hands turning to the right are telling us something: time waits for no one.
