Several hundred activists of the banned Awami League and its banned affiliate Chhatra League brought out a procession in the capital’s Gulshan on Friday afternoon. Two crude bombs, known locally as cocktails, went off during the demonstration, and police later fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
Gulshan police station’s officer-in-charge (OC), Daud Hossain, told media that the procession attempted to form near Bhola Mosque in Gulshan-1 at around 11:45am. When police tried to disperse it, the demonstrators set off two crude bombs. To bring the situation under control, police then fired two rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the marchers.
Videos circulating on social media showed several hundred people in the procession chanting the slogan “Joy Bangla,” and also showed police firing rubber bullets to break up the march. OC Daud Hossain said two people were arrested at the scene, and five crude bombs were recovered.
