Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has distributed food supplies to 550 helpless, flood-affected and waterlogged families in the char areas along the Padma riverbank in Kushtia’s Doulatpur upazila.
At an event held from 11:15am to noon on Wednesday (September 16) in the Digrirchar area of Charchilmari village in the upazila, food supplies were distributed to 250 families. On the same day, food supplies were also delivered to another 300 families in Chilmari, Chollishpara and Ramkrishnapur villages. In total, 550 families came under this humanitarian assistance from BGB.
Continuous rain and adverse weather during the ongoing monsoon season have created flood conditions in the char areas along the Padma riverbank. As a result, many families, including low-income people, day labourers and agricultural workers, have become waterlogged. With employment also disrupted, the hardship for these families has increased further.
The food assistance was organised by the Kushtia Battalion (47 BGB) to ease the suffering of people affected by the disaster. Jashore Region Commander Brigadier General Mahmudul Hasan attended as chief guest and personally handed food supplies to the beneficiaries.
Also present were the Kushtia Sector Commander, the commanding officer of Kushtia Battalion (47 BGB), the acting deputy commanding officer, junior officers and other BGB members, along with local public representatives, teachers, journalists, dignitaries and a large number of local residents.
Local residents expressed satisfaction with BGB’s initiative. They said the flooding has left many families in the char areas facing a crisis of food and employment, and that BGB’s food assistance has come as important support for the disaster-affected people at this time.
Alongside border security, BGB has been carrying out various humanitarian and welfare activities to stand by border-area residents during disasters and crises. As part of this, it runs programmes including relief and food distribution for flood victims, free medical care and winter clothing distribution. Kushtia Battalion (47 BGB) said it will continue such humanitarian activities in the future, alongside ensuring border security, for the welfare of border-area residents.
