Man surrenders after confessing to killing father-in-law in Kaliganj

A day after allegedly hacking his father-in-law to death in Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila, the victim’s son-in-law, Mozammel Haque, alias Muja Sarkar, surrendered at Kaliganj police station.

He turned himself in at the station Saturday morning, August 29, and confessed to the killing.

Mozammel is the son of the late Nowab Ali Sarkar of the upazila’s Jamalpur Modhyapara area.

According to the case documents, Mozammel married the victim’s daughter, Shahanara, 17 years ago. The couple has one son and two daughters. Police said that since the marriage, Mozammel had repeatedly subjected his wife to physical abuse and pressured her family to bring dowry money.

When the dowry money was not paid, Mozammel struck his father-in-law, Mojid Morol, in the head with a sharp hatchet. Mojid was critically injured and collapsed. Local residents took him to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Following the killing, the victim’s son, Md Liton Morol, filed a murder case against Mozammel on Friday night, naming him as the accused. Mozammel surrendered at the police station Saturday morning.

Kaliganj police station officer-in-charge Md Jakir Hossain confirmed Mozammel’s surrender, saying: “An operation to arrest the accused was launched the same night. After completing legal procedures, the accused has been sent to Gazipur court.”

The killing took place Friday as Mojid was heading to Jamalpur Basair Bazar to sell bananas, when his son-in-law attacked him with a hatchet in front of a shop in Bhangaripotti lane. Mojid was the son of the late Alku Morol of Jamalpur’s Modhyapara area and worked as a banana trader.
