Actress Raveena Tandon began her acting career in 1991 opposite Bollywood star Salman Khan in the film ‘Patthar Ke Phool.’ But for several years after that film, a string of her movies flopped. At the time she was nicknamed ‘Little Miss Jinx Raveena’ — a jinx being a person or thing believed to bring bad luck.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Tandon spoke about her journey and how circumstances changed to make her one of the top actresses of the 1990s. She said the film ‘Mohra’ marked a major turning point in her career.
Tandon said the media of that time was also very cruel to her. “They used to call me ‘Little Miss Jinx Raveena,'” she said. Despite the criticism, she said she believed a film’s success or failure does not depend on any single person. “You give your 100 percent; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s not any one person’s fault,” she said.
Tandon said everything changed after ‘Mohra’ was released in 1994. Recalling that period, she described how producer Gulshan Rai publicly called her ‘lucky,’ completely shifting the film industry’s attitude toward her. “After that, suddenly I became very lucky. Then producers started saying they should be given a chance [to work with me],” she said. Even so, some filmmakers had believed that any film featuring Tandon would flop.
But after ‘Shool’ was released in 1999, her image as an actress changed. The film broke her glamorous image and presented an entirely different Raveena Tandon.
Tandon currently appears in the film ‘Welcome to the Jungle,’ in which she is set to be seen opposite Akshay Kumar after about 22 years.
