Argentina could not stand up to Spain in the World Cup final. Over the regulation 90 minutes, it was as if Lionel Messi and his team barely touched the ball, and the defeat broke the hearts of millions of supporters. As his favourite team lost, BJP MLA and actor Rudranil Ghosh jokingly laid all the blame on opposition Trinamool Congress leader Arup Biswas.
Speaking to the media after the final, the Tollywood star said: “I may be an Argentina supporter and a Messi fan, but today those who played brilliantly are the ones who won. It’s sad; many are saying many things, and I’m bearing it with a stone on my chest. We’ll meet again at the next World Cup — we’ll talk then.” Joking, he added: “Many are saying that if Messi hadn’t met Arup Biswas, the result would have been different. I’m hurt — what can be done!”
In December 2025, Argentine star Lionel Messi had set foot in Kolkata. The severe mismanagement and VIP-culture chaos around his event at the Yuva Bharati stadium then is still fresh in locals’ memory. Fans who had paid thousands of rupees for tickets could not see their favourite star properly and began protesting; Messi also left the ground before the scheduled time because of the disorder. Chairs were then vandalised at the venue and bottles thrown toward police and spectators at the front. The event’s main organiser, Shatadru Dutta, was arrested. There is talk that Messi may visit Kolkata again.
