Shishir Monir, lawyer for the authorities of the capital’s Ad-din Medical College Hospital, has called the health ministry’s notice to cancel the hospital’s licence over the deaths of six newborns “unlawful” and outside the law. At a press conference at a Dhaka hotel on Saturday (6 June), he said the ministry’s notice was not consistent with the prevailing law and procedure, and that the hospital authorities would take the necessary legal steps against it.

He said the hospital authorities had acted quickly after the incident; two nurses had been temporarily suspended after a preliminary investigation found evidence of professional negligence, and immediate disciplinary action had also been taken against others over alleged dereliction of duty. Presenting the affected families’ position, the press conference said no party wanted the hospital to close or medical services to be disrupted, but that the relatives of the dead newborns demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible. Promising to stand by the families, it said the hospital authorities would remain beside them for life, offering jobs to eligible family members and respectable financial support as compensation.
