DHAKA — Tasnim Afroz Imi, a former vice president of Dhaka University’s Shamsunnahar Hall and later a candidate for DUCSU VP, was released on bail Thursday after 60 days in jail in a case linked to her public broadcast of the March 7 speech.

She walked out of the main gate of Kashimpur Central Jail at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 7. Her parents and in-laws were waiting at the jail gate to receive her.

Imi said she had been granted bail in the anti-terrorism case the previous Thursday but was released seven days later because of legal formalities.

On March 7 of this year, around 9:30 p.m., Imi and several others announced a program to play the historic speech in front of Shahbagh police station. As they played the speech from a rickshaw-mounted loudspeaker, a group of Dhaka University students — including DUCSU leaders AB Zubayer and Mosaddek Ali Ibne Mohammad, and Tahmid Al Modassir, convener of the National Chhatra Shakti, the student wing of the NCP — stopped them. AB Zubayer and Mosaddek Ali then took Imi and another person, along with the rickshaw, to Shahbagh police station, where they were detained. The following Sunday, the three were shown arrested in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act filed by Shahbagh police and sent to jail. Police filed the case as the complainant.
