The government will newly recruit 4,000 sub-inspectors (SI), 400 sergeants and 10,000 constables. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed disclosed the information Thursday afternoon, August 27, responding to a question from Md Nurul Amin, member of parliament for Rangpur-6, ahead of question time in the third session of the National Parliament.

The home minister said that, to increase police manpower, the current government has taken steps to create 4,000 new unarmed SI posts, along with 400 sergeant posts and 10,000 constable posts. Once these posts are created, manpower will also increase in Rangpur district. He added that, over the next five years, shortfalls in police vehicles and watercraft under the developed and organogram-equipment framework will be phased out through procurement within the revenue budget.

A review meeting was held on March 10 in the Home Ministry’s conference room, chaired by the ministry’s senior secretary.

The meeting was told that a proposal sent by the police department for recruiting 4,000 SIs to Grade 10 (unarmed) posts across various units under Bangladesh Police’s organizational structure would be reviewed.

Immediately after taking office, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had highlighted the manpower shortage at various levels of the police force and emphasized the need for new recruitment.

Earlier, speaking to reporters at the secretariat on February 26, the home minister said 10,000 new constables would be recruited soon to strengthen police capacity to maintain law and order nationwide. He said the ministry is working tirelessly to increase police manpower, that the process for recruiting the new 10,000 constables had already begun, and that the recruitment notice would be published as soon as clearance was received from the Ministry of Finance.
