Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice-President Sadiq Kayem has claimed that in the 11 months since taking office, DUCSU has achieved things in securing students’ rights that no one else managed in the university’s 105-year history.
He made the remarks Saturday at a reception for outstanding students, held at Patuakhali District Shilpakala Academy.
“In 11 months, we’ve proven how to secure students’ rights,” Sadiq Kayem said. “Students themselves say that what we’ve done at DUCSU since taking office over the past 11 months hasn’t been done in 105 years of university history.”
He also claimed that incidents of fighting, violence, extortion and tender-rigging on campus have fallen to near zero under DUCSU’s current leadership. Citing data from multiple surveys, the DUCSU vice-president said 93 percent of students believe the Dhaka University campus is currently in its safest state ever.
He said the main purpose of campus is for students to study, conduct research, think, ask questions and invent new technologies, and said that academic environment has already been secured.
Highlighting what he described as a failure to give the country’s younger generation proper recognition and opportunity, he said: “In this country, over the past 55 years, our leaders never gave our younger generation, our students, the consideration or recognition they deserved.” Sadiq Kayem said this long-standing failure is why the nation keeps going in circles. He also said that while the country’s talented students prove their worth at renowned universities abroad, opportunities need to be created at home for their talents to be properly developed and put to use.
Abdullah An Nahiyan, chairman of the Patuakhali Welfare Foundation, presided over the event, at which 300 outstanding students from various educational institutions in Patuakhali Sadar upazila were honored.
