Former state minister of home affairs Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj has sharply criticized ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s announcement that she would return to Bangladesh this year, calling it “hypocrisy.”
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, Sohel Taj wrote that Hasina’s “ego and arrogance” had proven capable of destroying both a country and a political party.
He accused her of “mass killings, enforced disappearances, murders, and corruption,” as well as “burying democracy, misusing the spirit of the liberation war, and betraying the country and its people.” He said she had “destroyed the Awami League, fled after being driven out by student and public protests, and embezzled billions of taka abroad.”
Sohel Taj described her announcement to return as “another act of hypocrisy” that endangered ordinary Awami League workers.
He wrote that without self-criticism and self-reflection, the Awami League’s chances of returning to the political stage “in the foreseeable future are very slim.”
