In a sharp response to US President Donald Trump’s remarks, Iran has flatly stated that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz “was Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian in the future.”

Donald Trump had recently claimed that the United States would soon declare the world’s key energy shipping route American territory.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi dismissed Trump’s remarks in a post on X, saying the strait — effectively closed since the outbreak of the Middle East war — “will only be opened or closed on Iran’s orders.”

He further wrote: “Trump says that once Iran is defeated, he will declare the Strait of Hormuz American territory. No tweet, aircraft carrier, or administrative order can seize the Strait of Hormuz. At least acknowledge, for once, the strategic and major defeats you have faced so far.”

However, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, an unnamed White House official later clarified that Trump had made the remark largely in jest.

Donald Trump had earlier claimed on his social media platform Truth Social that the United States has “full control” over the Strait of Hormuz, and that the US naval blockade has built a “wall of steel” that Iran lacks the capability to breach.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on social media that the United States keeps making repeated miscalculations due to intelligence failures, and that this time it is suffering from an even bigger misconception regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

It should be noted that this war in the Middle East began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel jointly launched airstrikes on Iran. The attack killed several top leaders, including Iran’s longtime supreme religious leader, 86-year-old Ali Khamenei, in response to which Iran launched retaliatory strikes on US and Israeli targets.
