The government will organize local government elections by following constitutional rules to the letter, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan has said.

He made the remarks Sunday, August 23, while exchanging greetings with heads of various agencies and departments under the ministry, and with media, at the Secretariat.

State Minister Mir Shahe Alam was also present and extended greetings at the event.

The local government minister said: “They call us a cantonment party, yet it was the Awami League that killed democracy. Martyred President Ziaur Rahman restored it.”

He said this democratic government will not hold elections the way they were held under the previous government.

On the subject of corruption, the minister said the government will not tolerate any form of corruption. Those found responsible will face action against them through the Anti-Corruption Commission via due process, he said.

Noting that BNP does not believe in vindictive politics, he added that the government wants to establish the rule of law.
