In the space of two days the price of gold has fallen by up to 3,324 taka a bhori. Silver prices have also fallen slightly. The new prices took effect at 10 a.m. on Friday.
The Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) announced this in a press release on Friday morning. Although prices have fallen in the global market, the association, as always, gave the fall in the domestic price of pure (tejabi) gold as the reason for adjusting the gold price. Most recently, last Wednesday, the price of gold had risen by 2,741 taka a bhori.
On January 29 this year the price of gold reached the highest level in the country’s history. That morning it jumped 16,213 taka a bhori to stand at 2,86,000 taka. At present, however, the price is 65,000 taka lower than that.
According to the new rates, the price of a bhori (11.664 grams) of 22-carat gold has fallen to 2,20,858 taka, 21-carat gold to 2,10,943 taka, 18-carat gold to 1,81,200 taka and traditional-method gold to 1,48,016 taka.
Until yesterday, Thursday, a bhori of 22-carat gold was 2,24,182 taka, 21-carat 2,14,093 taka, 18-carat 1,83,883 taka and traditional-method gold 1,50,232 taka. That means that today the price of 21-carat gold has fallen 3,149 taka a bhori, 18-carat 2,683 taka and traditional-method gold 2,216 taka.
As VAT is included in the price of gold, jewellery establishments will not separately collect VAT from buyers of gold ornaments. In this financial year’s budget, VAT of 2,500 taka was set on each bhori of gold ornaments. Before that, VAT was 5 percent of the total price of the ornaments.
According to Gold Price dot org, the price of gold in the global spot market has fallen somewhat today. At a quarter to noon today, the price of an ounce (31.1034768 grams) of gold was 4,024 dollars, 0.55 percent less than yesterday.
Silver prices, alongside gold, have also fallen somewhat. Today the price of 22-carat silver has fallen 175 taka a bhori to 4,607 taka. The price of 21-carat silver, meanwhile, has fallen to 4,374 taka.
