Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said orders have been given to carry out a special nationwide operation to suppress terrorism, adding that operations are under way across the country to recover illegal and looted weapons. He said special operations would also be carried out to catch drug traffickers, criminals and extortionists.
He made the remarks to reporters Saturday, August 29, after a “quarterly crime review meeting” at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium.
The home minister said the operations would be carried out with intelligence support from various agencies. He said this is already under way, and that additional guidance had been given Saturday to strengthen it, along with certain strategies that he said would not be appropriate to disclose publicly.
Reminding police of their accountability in suppressing crime, the minister said a specific deadline has been set for taking effective action against criminals, extortionists and drug traffickers.
He said any officer who fails to show expected progress within that timeframe would face strict action.
The home minister further said special strategic operations are being conducted nationwide, with support from intelligence agencies, to curb illegal weapons, drugs, smuggling and extortion.
At the event, chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir, senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Manzur Morshed Chowdhury spoke as special guest. The welcome address was delivered by Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Khondaker Rafiqul Islam. Others present included Additional IGP (Administration) at police headquarters, A K M Awlad Hossain.
At the event, the minister answered questions and held discussions with DIGs from various ranges, police commissioners and additional commissioners from various metropolitan areas, and district superintendents of police (SPs).
