Former Speaker Jamir Uddin Sarkar dies at 94

Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar, former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad and a member of the BNP standing committee, has died.

He died at 4:19 a.m. on Sunday (July 12) while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka. His youngest son, Noufel Jamir, confirmed the death in a Facebook post. The veteran politician was 94.

According to hospital sources, he had been under treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital for some time for old-age and various physical ailments. Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, had visited the hospital on Saturday night to inquire about his condition.

Jamir Uddin Sarkar was born on December 1, 1931, in Nayabari village of Tetulia upazila in Panchagarh district. After completing higher education at the University of Dhaka, he qualified as a barrister from Lincoln’s Inn in London and joined the legal profession in 1960. He was one of the founding members of the BNP and a member of the party’s highest policymaking forum, the standing committee.

Over his long political career, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar served as Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad. He also successfully served as acting president of Bangladesh after Professor A Q M Badruddoza Chowdhury resigned from the presidency, and served as minister of various important ministries at different times.

News of his death cast a shadow of grief over political circles, with top BNP leaders and figures from various political parties expressing deep shock and sorrow.

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad expressed grief at the death of Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar. In a condolence message, he prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and expressed sorrow and deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Chief Whip of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Nurul Islam also expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death, praying for the salvation of the departed soul and conveying deep sympathy to the bereaved family members in a condolence message.

In a separate condolence message, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal expressed grief at the death of the former Speaker, praying for the salvation of the departed soul and expressing sorrow and deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
