A woman in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah, has been accused of trying to kill her husband, Md Miraj Biswas, 40, by hacking him with a sharp weapon while he slept, following a family dispute. Police have taken the wife, Mosammat Sumaiya Khatun, 25, into custody.
The incident happened at around 3am on Wednesday (September 30). Miraj is the son of Abu Bakar Biswas of Aruakandi village in Umedpur union of Shailkupa upazila. Sumaiya is the daughter of Saiful Islam of Dalnagar village in Jashore.
Family sources said Miraj’s first wife died about a year ago and he then married Sumaiya. Since the marriage the couple often quarrelled over household matters, and Sumaiya is alleged to have treated the children of Miraj’s first marriage badly.
Miraj, who is injured, said he had been suffering from fever for three days. During a quarrel over a minor matter on Wednesday, he slapped his wife. In response, at around 3am, Sumaiya attacked him with a sharp weapon on various parts of his body while he slept, trying to kill him, he alleged. His parents came running when they heard his screams, found him bleeding and took him to the upazila health complex.
Sub-inspector Jahangir of Shailkupa police station went to the scene and took Sumaiya into custody. OC (investigation) Shakil Ahmed said the incident would be investigated and legal action taken once a written complaint was received from the victim’s family.
