BOGURA — A 35-year-old man named Selim Faqir was beaten to death by a mob in Bogura’s Shibganj upazila early Friday on suspicion of theft, police said. The incident occurred at dawn on May 8 in Chhatua Matalpara village in the upazila’s Majhihat union.
Police said Selim was a resident of Pilkhanj village in Kahalu upazila’s Kalai union.
According to local residents and police, a group of men entered the home of Gopal Chandra in Chhatua village late Thursday night. Family members said the intruders were attempting to flee after looting cash and gold jewelry. When the household cried out, neighbors rushed to the scene and detained Selim. He was severely beaten by the angry crowd and died on the spot.
Purnima Saha, the homeowner’s daughter-in-law, said several men cut through a wall to enter the house and held family members hostage at the point of locally made weapons. They took cash and gold from the house and stripped jewelry off her person, she said. Local residents caught one of the men as they tried to flee.
Gopal Chandra, the homeowner, said about 350,000 taka in cash and roughly 8.5 bhori (about 99 grams) of gold jewelry had been taken from his home.
Shibganj police station officer-in-charge Shahinuzzaman said Selim faced multiple cases of theft, robbery and snatching at various police stations. The body was recovered and sent to the morgue at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for autopsy. The incident will be investigated and legal action taken, he said.
