Three snakes were spotted in a corridor of the Education Ministry at the Secretariat, causing alarm among officials over such a rare occurrence in a busy office building.
The snakes were seen Thursday morning, August 27, in a corridor on the 19th floor of Building No. 6 at the Secretariat.
Officials and staff expressed surprise that snakes had appeared on the 19th floor of such a tall building. They suspect more snakes may be present in some storage area within the building. Snake sightings are not typically common in Dhaka, since the capital is not considered snake habitat. The exact species of the snakes has not been confirmed.
In November of last year, a large number of snakes were recovered from several areas of the capital, marking the highest number of snake sightings recorded in the city at the time. Over a four-month period last year, more than 300 venomous snakes were recovered from various densely populated areas of Dhaka.
While a few venomous snakes had been found in Dhaka before, that was the first time such a large number had been reported.
The discovery of venomous snakes in such a densely populated area as Dhaka surprised some researchers, while others considered the phenomenon fairly normal.
Venomous snakes have so far been recovered from Dhaka’s Banasree, Aftabnagar, Mohammadpur, Bosila, Uttara Sector 18, Khilgaon, Kachukhet, Mirpur-2, Niketan, and Uttarkhan and Dakshinkhan areas of Uttara. The largest number of snakes were found in the RAJUK flat project area of Uttara Sector 18.
