Bangladeshi midfielder Shomit Shom showed a glimpse of his ability in the New York Cosmos jersey the day after his 29th birthday. He played a crucial role in Cosmos’s 4-2 win over Fort Wayne FC in a USL League One match, recording two assists.
Cosmos controlled the match from the start. Shomit’s passing and chance creation in midfield played a big role in driving the team forward. In the 44th minute of the first half, Jaoneh Lamin scored using his perfectly weighted through ball, sending Cosmos into the break with the lead.
The New York side kept up its attacking edge after the break. Early in the second half, Lamin scored again from another Shomit pass. The forward made his second goal of the match using another superb through ball that split the defense. Lamin later completed his hat-trick. Fort Wayne scored twice to narrow the gap, but Cosmos held on to leave the field with a 4-2 win.
Beyond his goal contributions, Shomit was effective throughout the match. Touching the ball 45 times, the midfielder completed 30 of 36 passes, an 83% success rate. Four of his five long balls were also successful. Alongside his two assists, he also created one big goal-scoring chance for a teammate.
Shomit also filled his role defensively. He made three tackles, two clearances and two ball recoveries in the match. The Bangladeshi midfielder also blocked one shot.
Shomit has played three matches since joining New York Cosmos, the former club of Brazilian legend Pele, starting in all three. In just his third match, the 29-year-old Bangladeshi announced his arrival at his new club with a two-assist performance that delivered the win.
