Before going to Bangabhaban to take the oath as president, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited the graves of BNP founder, martyred President Ziaur Rahman, and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
After Friday prayers at the Staff Quarters Jame Masjid on Bailey Road today, he went directly to Zia Uddyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 1:46 p.m. There, he placed a wreath at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia, stood silently for a moment, recited Surah Fatiha, and offered prayers.
BNP MP Kamruzzaman Ratan and Yunus Ali, assistant private secretary to the newly elected president, were present at the time.
Party leaders, activists and supporters, standing outside the security cordon around the grave premises, waved and greeted Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected the country’s 23rd president through a vote in the national parliament yesterday, Thursday. He will take the oath today, Friday, at 7:00 p.m. at Bangabhaban before Acting Speaker Kaiser Kamal.
Over his long political career, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has placed wreaths here many times as BNP secretary general, together with party leaders, activists and supporters.
