Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for an immediate end to the months-long war with the United States, saying that even as diplomatic talks remain stalled, Iran is now in a “position of strength.”
Speaking at a meeting with physicians on Friday, Pezeshkian said: “Since we are now in a strong and dignified position, it is good for us to end this war now.”
Pezeshkian also said: “The whole world acknowledges our victory. Everyone is saying the United States violated every kind of rule by attacking our schools, hospitals and infrastructure. Because of this, they are now despised across the world.”
Pezeshkian also defended the memorandum of understanding reached with the United States last June. Hardline members of Iran’s parliament had alleged that his government made concessions to the United States through that agreement.
In response, Pezeshkian said: “They won’t be able to point to a single clause in this agreement that speaks of surrender. On the contrary, all the commitments fall on the other side to fulfill.”
Even so, within days of the memorandum’s expiry, Iran’s military leadership said it stood ready to retaliate against any fresh threat.
Citing Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, Iranian media reported that the country’s forces are prepared to strike on land, at sea, in the air, in air defense and even in cyberspace. He warned that any new threat would be met with a devastating response.
Talks over the Strait of Hormuz
The foreign ministers of Oman and Iran spoke by phone last Friday. According to a report by Oman’s state news agency, the two ministers discussed creating a suitable environment to resume talks and diplomatic dialogue, as well as the situation of shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran continues to keep the critical waterway partially closed. The United States, meanwhile, continues to maintain a naval blockade there.
U.S. media reports say a covert fleet of oil tankers is moving through the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz, escorted by the U.S. Navy. These reports say this has made it possible to export between 5 million and 10 million barrels of oil a day.
Threat of new sanctions
U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced doubt over whether Iran is genuinely interested in sitting down for talks. Asked by reporters whether the scope for military action against Iran has narrowed, he said: “We’re really waiting to see what happens in the end.”
Trump also said: “We have full control over the Strait of Hormuz and the surrounding land, and the entire region. They want to make a deal. But in my view, they’re still not ready to make the right deal.”
Trump has also threatened economic measures against countries that support Iran. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, meanwhile, has said harsh sanctions will “collapse” the Iranian government.
