Police have recovered 95 old batteries looted from an autorickshaw garage in Louhajang, Munshiganj, and arrested three people on charges of involvement.
Additional superintendent of police Md Anisur Rahman of the Sreenagar circle gave the details at a press briefing in front of Padma Bridge North police station at about 11am on Friday (September 25). The batteries were recovered and the accused arrested in drives on Thursday night.
Those arrested are Md Masud, 33, of Olipura village in Bauphal, Patuakhali; Aslam Sheikh, 38, of Dipupura village in Sirajdikhan, Munshiganj; and Sajib Fakir, 29, of East Autshahi village in Tongibari.
At the briefing, Anisur Rahman said a robbery took place last Saturday night at an autorickshaw garage called Sureshwar Faruk in the Mawa old ghat area of Medinimandal in the upazila. A gang of three or four unidentified robbers cut the garage’s lock, got in, tied the hands and feet of the guard, Masum, beat him and threatened to kill him. They then took 95 old batteries and 22 chargers from 22 battery-run autorickshaws in the garage and fled in a pickup van.
Police put the value of the looted goods at about 1.05 million taka. A case was filed at Padma Bridge (North) police station on Thursday.
After the case was filed, using technology and tip-offs, police arrested Masud on a paved road in South Jatrabari, Dhaka, at about 7:30pm on Thursday, he said. Acting on information he gave, the 95 looted batteries were recovered.
During questioning, Masud said he had bought the batteries for 674,000 taka from Aslam Sheikh, owner of Aslam Cycle Store at Malkhanagar Chowrasta in Sirajdikhan, the police official said. Aslam was arrested in a drive at about 8:30pm.
During initial questioning, Aslam told police that Sajib Fakir of Tongibari and a friend had brought the batteries to him to sell, and that they were sold to Masud in their presence using the cycle store’s cash memo.
Sajib was then arrested in a drive in the South Betka Notun Bazar area of Tongibari at about 10:05pm. Police say Sajib admitted his involvement during initial questioning.
Drives to arrest others involved are continuing, said Padma Bridge North police station officer-in-charge Syed Md Akter Hossain.
