Bangabhaban is ready for a twin ceremony. First, at 7:30 p.m., Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will take the oath as the country’s 23rd president. The newly elected president will then administer the oath to four new cabinet members.

Acting Speaker of the National Parliament Kaiser Kamal will administer the oath to the newly elected president. The president will then administer the oath to the four new cabinet members.

According to Bangabhaban and Cabinet Division sources, Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will arrive at Bangabhaban first. Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tareque Rahman will then arrive at Bangabhaban. Everyone will then enter Bangabhaban’s Darbar Hall together.

The president’s oath-taking ceremony will be conducted by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani. It will begin with the national anthem and Quran recitation, after which the speaker will administer the oath to the president. According to Bangabhaban and Cabinet Division sources, roughly 1,500 invitations were distributed for the oath-taking ceremony.

Under Bangabhaban’s customary protocol, after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir takes the oath as president, he will sit to sign the oath book. At that time, newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul and Acting Speaker Kaiser Kamal will sit in the two chairs on either side. After the new president completes the signing formalities, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will move to the middle chair — meaning that from that moment, he will officially occupy the president’s chair. At that time, Major Hafiz Uddin and Kaiser Kamal will sit in the two chairs on either side.

After the oath-taking ceremony, the national anthem will be performed once more. A reception will follow.

Md Sahabuddin resigned as president on July 24. Under the constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed took over the president’s duties, while Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal took over the speaker’s duties.

The new presidential election was held Thursday in the parliament building’s meeting chamber. BNP’s candidate, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was elected with 255 votes, while the 11-party alliance’s candidate, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.

Immediately after the president takes the oath in the evening, newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will administer the oath to the four new cabinet members. Of these, three will be full ministers and one a state minister. Vehicles have also been arranged for them.

President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam said all preparations for the president’s oath-taking ceremony have been completed, and that final-hour preparations are now under way.
