A young woman in Mohanganj upazila, Netrokona, has accused a 24-year-old man of raping her on a promise of marriage and forcing her to have an abortion under threat of death.
The accused, from Nayapara village in Sahildeo union, works as an assistant to a village doctor at Mohanganj bazar. The woman lodged a written complaint at Mohanganj police station on Wednesday (September 30).
According to the complaint, the two had a relationship about three years ago, but her family later married her to someone else. He then contacted her again and said he wanted to continue the relationship. On June 8, on a promise of marriage, he brought her from her husband’s home to his own and raped her there, then sent her home with a promise of marriage. As a result, she and her husband divorced.
The complaint further says that after the divorce, he had sex with her several times on a promise of marriage and she became pregnant. After he threatened her, she lost the pregnancy after taking medication.
On September 24, when she went to his chamber and pressed him to marry her, he abused her and threatened to kill her, according to the complaint. He has since switched off his mobile phone and gone into hiding, and could not be reached for comment.
“The complaint will be investigated, and the necessary action will be taken under the law once the investigation is complete,” said Mohanganj police station officer-in-charge Hafizul Islam Harun.
