12 tons of stolen rebar recovered in Mirsharai, 3 arrested

Police in Mirsharai, Chattogram, have recovered 12.1 tons of iron rebar stolen from a BSRM company shipment. Three people involved in the incident have been arrested. The stolen truck that had been carrying the rebar was also recovered, empty.

The information was disclosed at a press conference at Jorarganj police station on Friday afternoon, August 21.

Those arrested are Md Riyad Hossain, son of Ismail Hossain of Olinagar village, Korerhat union, Mirsharai; truck helper Md Hadis Molla, son of Hafiz Molla of Kashiani police station in Gopalganj district; and Abul Bashar, alias Bashi, son of the late Kanchan Sheikh of Mohammadpur police station in Naogaon district.

Police said that around 3:00 p.m. on August 14, 13 tons of iron rebar of various sizes were being sent by truck from BSRM’s company under Jorarganj police station to Sunamganj. Along the way, the rebar-laden truck was stolen. After the incident, police launched an operation to recover the stolen goods and arrest those involved.

Jorarganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Halim said: “From the moment of the incident, we began working with the highest priority on recovering the stolen rebar. Under the overall direction and supervision of the superintendent of police, the operation was carried out using information technology, gathering intelligence and analyzing various data. At the same time, operations were carried out at various possible locations in coordination with inter-district police. At one stage of the operation, 12.1 tons of the stolen rebar were recovered from Ayan Enterprise at Mohammadpur Bazar in Naogaon district. Later, an operation was carried out in the Madhukhali police station area of Faridpur, recovering the empty truck that had carried the rebar. Three people involved in the incident have been arrested.”

The OC further said: “During initial questioning, the arrested individuals admitted to being involved in the theft. Efforts are under way to determine whether anyone else was involved and to locate the remaining stolen rebar. The recovered rebar and truck will be handed over following the subsequent legal process. Among those arrested, Riyad Hossain has been sent to jail through the court. The other two will be produced before the court once the legal process is complete.”
