U.S. President Donald Trump has once again claimed the Strait of Hormuz as “new U.S. territory.” His claim has pushed tensions between Washington and Tehran to an extreme. Iran, however, has rejected the U.S. claim. The country has said flatly that it will not open this critical international waterway in any way until Washington changes its policy. The news was reported by the online outlet Gulf News.

Trump shared an image on his Truth Social account Sunday marking the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory. He had posted a similar image on August 18 as well, and in remarks delivered on Long Island, threatened to declare the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory very soon.

Reacting sharply to Trump’s remarks, Mohsen Rezaee, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said the gap between being unable to open the Strait of Hormuz and claiming ownership of it is greater than the 7,000-mile distance between the strait and Washington. Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury Department is preparing to impose what it calls history’s “harshest ever” sanctions on Tehran, which reportedly include plans to pressure China, the main buyer of Iranian oil.

Calling the coming sanctions a step outside international law, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it will respond to any such action while safeguarding its national interest and dignity. At the same time, Iran warned neighboring countries in the Middle East that any nation that assists the United States in this economic war will be regarded as an “enemy.”
