An unbelievable hilsa fish has been caught in a cast net in the old Brahmaputra river, which flows through Mymensingh district.
On Friday morning, a local resident in the Moricha Char area of the district’s Ishwarganj upazila went to catch small fish in the nearby Brahmaputra river using a cast net, and caught a hilsa fish along with other small fish. The hilsa weighed roughly 600 to 700 grams. The fish appeared somewhat elongated.
Since hilsa is known as a fish of the sea and the rivers of the southern region, many were stunned to see this fish in the Brahmaputra.
Asked how the hilsa ended up in the Brahmaputra, Dr. Yahia Mahmud, former director general of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute and a fisheries scientist, said: “Hilsa travel from the sea to the Meghna river and various other rivers in the southern region to spawn. Because the old Brahmaputra is connected to the Meghna river, this hilsa may have lost its way amid the recent heavy rainfall and ended up here.”
He further said: “Because the Brahmaputra has a lower presence of the plankton that hilsa feed on, this fish is unlikely to taste as delicious as hilsa from the Meghna.”
