Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami and Leader of the Opposition, has said: “Joining the Mecca Pact is Bangladesh’s own sovereign matter. If Bangladesh makes a decision in the interest and needs of the country and the nation, there is no need for anyone else to feel short of breath over it.”
He made the remarks in a post on his Facebook page around 11:45 a.m. Thursday.
Discussion has been under way over whether Bangladesh might join the Mecca joint defense pact recently signed between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan. Views both for and against have already been expressed on the matter.
The joint defense pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan was signed in Mecca on August 7. Under the pact, if any of the three countries comes under military attack, it will be treated as an attack on all three.
