A mobile court has seized 271 sacks of fertilizer that had been stockpiled for sale above the government-fixed price in Chaugachha, Jashore.
Acting on a tip, the mobile court, led by upazila assistant commissioner (land) G.M.A. Munib, carried out the operation Wednesday afternoon, August 26, in the Parbazar area of Chaugachha municipal town. During the operation, 271 sacks of fertilizer were seized from a warehouse. A trader identified as Khairul Islam was fined 20,000 taka under the Fertilizer Management Act, 2006.
Present during the operation were upazila agriculture officer Musabbir Hosain, Yunus Ali Daphadar, president of the upazila BADC fertilizer dealers’ association, Selim Reza Awlia, president of the Chaugachha market traders’ association, and Chaugachha police. The seized fertilizer was sold to farmers at the government-fixed price.
Separately, on Monday afternoon, August 25, upazila assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate G.M.A. Munib and upazila agriculture officer Musabbir Hosain carried out an operation in the Chandpur Bottala Mor area of the municipal town, seizing 10 sacks of urea, 5 sacks of MOP, 12 sacks of TSP and 10 sacks of DAP fertilizer. All of the fertilizer was later sold to local farmers at the government-fixed price, with the proceeds deposited into the government treasury. A three-wheeler driver, Titon Hossain, 41, was fined 2,000 taka for transporting the fertilizer.
That evening, upazila assistant agriculture officer Saiful Islam filed a case against Khairul Islam at Chaugachha police station. The accused, Khairul Islam, is the son of the late Rowshan Ali of Azmatpur village in the upazila’s Dhuliani union.
Local farmers allege that a dishonest syndicate regularly transports government-subsidized fertilizer, wrapped in black polythene, on three-wheelers, vans, pickups and trucks to sell elsewhere on the black market. They have called for regular operations and strict monitoring to stop such irregularities.
Upazila agriculture officer Musabbir Hosain said arrangements have been made to sell the seized fertilizer to genuine farmers at the government-fixed price.
G.M.A. Munib, the upazila assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate who led the mobile court, said the upazila administration’s operations against any irregularities that harm farmers’ interests would continue.
