Do not, under any circumstances, hand money to a broker before going abroad, Chuadanga’s top administrator told would-be migrants. Contact government offices, get training and build yourself into a skilled worker first, he said — skilled workers earn higher wages overseas and bring honour to their country and families.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahirul Islam made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion on Saturday (2 August) morning at the district’s Sahitya Mancha, held to mark Remittance Fighters’ Day in memory of the July mass uprising.
Unskilled workers find it hard to get work abroad and can end up bringing disrepute to their families and the country, he said. “Do not be cheated through brokers in any way. Go abroad through official channels.”
The meeting was chaired by Abdul Halim, assistant director of the District Employment and Manpower Office. As special guest, Superintendent of Police Khondker Golam Mawla said the district’s overall law-and-order situation was now good, urging residents not to take the law into their own hands and to cooperate with police.
Remittance fighters Ansar Ali, an expatriate in the United States, and Parvin Akter, an expatriate in Jordan, were presented with crests at the event, which was attended by various local dignitaries.
