BNP standing committee member Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has been given the responsibility of acting secretary general of the party. The information was confirmed in a press release Thursday, signed by BNP Assistant Office Secretary Muhammad Munir Hossain.

The release said: “Notice is hereby given to all concerned that, under Article 7(Kha)(6) of BNP’s constitution, national standing committee member Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has been nominated as BNP’s acting secretary general. This nomination takes effect immediately.”

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi succeeds BNP’s recently outgoing secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir resigned as secretary general and from all party posts after becoming a candidate in the presidential election.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi currently serves as the prime minister’s political adviser. Before recently becoming a member of BNP’s standing committee, he served for a long time as the party’s senior joint secretary general. In that role, he was primarily responsible for running the party’s official activities.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi’s ancestral home is in Kurigram. He was born at Holy Family Hospital in Dhaka.

He studied at Bogura Zilla School, Kurigram Government High School, Bogura Bangla School, Rajshahi College, Rajshahi Government City College, and Rajshahi University.

At the start of his political life, after completing higher secondary school, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi entered student politics through a left-leaning organization called Biplobi Chhatra Union. He served as general secretary of Biplobi Chhatra Union’s Rajshahi Government College chapter. He later joined Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal after its founding. Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was given the responsibility of publicity secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Rajshahi University chapter. He was subsequently elected general secretary of the university chapter, and later served as central president of Chhatra Dal. In 1989, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was elected vice president (VP) of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election, a post he held until 1990.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was elected the party’s senior joint secretary general at BNP’s sixth council on March 19, 2016. He served as member secretary of BNP’s election-management committee for the 2026 national parliamentary election. On August 15, he became a member of BNP’s highest policymaking forum, the national standing committee.
