Spanish business sees big potential in Bangladesh

Spanish business leaders and entrepreneurs see huge trade and investment potential in Bangladesh’s textiles, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, renewable energy, agribusiness, information technology, logistics and consumer goods sectors.

Ángel Asensio, president of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, set out the market potential of Bangladesh at a seminar titled “Bangladesh: A Strategic Partner in the Global Economy” in Madrid, Spain, on Thursday (September 24).

Describing Bangladesh as one of Asia’s most important emerging markets, he said the country is moving forward on a path of sustainable growth and economic stability.

The European Union is currently one of Bangladesh’s main trading partners, with trade of about €23.3 billion in 2025, he said.

Highlighting the potential for green investment in Bangladesh, he added that there are opportunities for about $172 billion of green investment in green buildings, transport, climate-smart agriculture, infrastructure and waste management between 2018 and 2030. He also described export diversification as both a major challenge and an opportunity for Bangladesh’s economy.

FBCCI administrator Md Fazlul Haque urged European businesses to invest in Bangladesh. “The current government is encouraging foreign investment,” he said. “In particular, there are plans to offer investors major incentives such as free land in renewable energy, logistics and infrastructure, from which the government can buy electricity at a fixed price.”

Bangladesh’s ambassador to Spain, Md Masudur Rahman, attended the seminar. Panellists included EuroCham Bangladesh president Nuria Lopez, international trade consultant Pablo Araujo, Tarek Elba, executive vice-president for Asia and Africa at Molins, and Ana Rodes, global director of sustainability at Recover.

Also present were FBCCI secretary general Md Alamgir and members of the FBCCI business delegation visiting Spain, along with representatives of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce and EuroCham Bangladesh.

A 26-member FBCCI business delegation, led by FBCCI administrator Md Fazlul Haque, left for Europe on September 23 on an 11-day visit aimed at increasing bilateral trade with European countries, building industrial links and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).
