Malda district police in West Bengal have submitted a proposal to the state government to establish three new police stations, two new police outposts, and upgrade one existing police camp to a full outpost along the Bangladesh-India border, police sources said.
The proposal was sent as part of the administrative process, and officials expressed confidence it would receive state government approval. Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh briefed media about the proposal on Sunday.
He said the existing police outposts at Kumbhira (under Vaishnabnagar police station), Golapganj (under Kaliachak police station), and Bulbulchandi (under Habibpur police station) have been proposed for upgrade to full police stations. Two new police outposts are planned at Jajail (under Habibpur police station) and Jagdala (under Bamangola police station). The Mahadipur police camp, under Ingrejbazar police station, has also been proposed for upgrade to a police outpost.
Singh said that if approved, the district’s police personnel strength would increase significantly.
India’s Malda district shares a long and extensive border with Bangladesh. According to a Telegraph India report, this border has long been known as a high-risk zone for infiltration, cattle smuggling, and drug trafficking.
After the new government took office in West Bengal, Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari directed the handover of necessary land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for barbed-wire fencing in vulnerable border areas. Fencing work is underway in several sections of the border.
Singh said district police will continue working in coordination with the BSF to strengthen border security and prevent infiltration. The long unprotected border sections in the Habibpur and Bamangola police station areas are expected to benefit most from these measures, which include one new police station and two new outposts planned for the region.
Joel Murmu, BJP legislator from Habibpur and West Bengal’s Minister of State for Tribal Development, welcomed the initiative. “Cattle smuggling, infiltration, and drug trafficking have been long-standing problems in my constituency. Setting up new police stations and outposts will strengthen law and order,” he said.
