New York mayor Zohran Mamdani has said Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated “baseless lies” in his speech to the UN General Assembly in an attempt to “hide” Israel’s “genocide” against Palestinians.
Mamdani made the comment in a statement on Thursday after Netanyahu’s address to the General Assembly. Netanyahu has made the same kind of remarks many times before, he said.
Netanyahu repeated “baseless lies” in his UN speech intended to cover up his government’s actions against Palestinians, Mamdani said, adding that no speech can change the fact of the arrest warrant issued against Netanyahu by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In his UN speech, Netanyahu also criticised Mamdani, calling the New York mayor “antisemitic” and alleging that many Jews in New York do not feel safe because of Mamdani’s remarks.
Netanyahu also rejected the accusation of genocide against Israel in Gaza. In his words, Israel did not commit genocide but prevented one. He also accused Mamdani of spreading “lies” about Israel.
Mamdani responded soon afterwards, saying that no speech can change any accusation or the reality, and that Netanyahu remains subject to an ICC arrest warrant.
Delegates from several dozen countries walked out of the General Assembly hall as Netanyahu began his speech, an episode that drew wide international attention. Pro-Palestinian protests were held outside the UN at the same time.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in 2024 for Netanyahu and former Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the war in Gaza. Israel has rejected the charges.
