Police in Tongi West have recovered the half-decomposed body of Akash Sardar, 21, a Faridpur man recently returned from working abroad, who had been abducted under the pretext of a job offer. His body was recovered around 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 24, from a drain beside Toilet Block No. 19 at the Ijtema Ground in Tongi, Gazipur.
The body was later sent to the morgue at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Akash Sardar was the son of Karim Sardar, of the Chandpur area, Rahmat Bepari Para, under Faridpur Kotwali police station. He had returned to Bangladesh from abroad around three months earlier and, being unemployed since his return, had been looking for work.
After the case was filed, investigating officer Md Hasan Sikder’s ongoing inquiry turned up important clues about Akash’s whereabouts and those involved in the case. With help from RAB, the main accused, Mazharul Islam, alias Mithu, was arrested. Based on information he provided, Akash’s body was recovered from a drain at the Tongi Ijtema Ground.
According to the case’s first information report (FIR), the main accused, Mazharul Islam, alias Mithu, 30, lured Akash away from his home toward Dhaka around 10:30 a.m. on July 27 under the pretext of offering him a job. That evening around 7 p.m., a call from a WhatsApp number to Akash’s wife, Jerin, informed her that Akash was being held. Akash’s phone was later found switched off. After searching various places without success, his family filed a case at the police station.
Akash’s father, Karim Sardar, filed the case at Faridpur Kotwali police station on August 2, naming Mazharul Islam, alias Mithu, Apu Mia, 25, and Sumon Mia, 35, along with several unidentified others, as accused. The FIR alleged that Akash had been lured away and held captive under the pretext of a job offer.
Faridpur Kotwali police began investigating the case with priority as soon as it was filed. Under the supervision and direction of Officer-in-Charge Mahmudul Hasan, investigating officer Md Hasan Sikder examined various aspects of the case. Through analysis of technical data, verification of various leads and fieldwork, investigators identified the whereabouts of main accused Mazharul Islam Mithu.
With RAB’s assistance, Mithu was later arrested in the Tongi area. Investigators verified the information he provided, then carried out an operation in the Tongi Ijtema Ground area based on that information, eventually recovering Akash’s half-decomposed body from the drain beside Toilet Block No. 19.
However, questions remain over exactly how Akash died after being abducted, who was involved in his killing, and the real motive behind the case — questions investigators are still working to answer, said Mahmudul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Faridpur Kotwali police station. He said efforts are continuing to identify and arrest others involved in the case.
He said all aspects of the case are being investigated with priority, and that the true circumstances of Akash’s death are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
